20 Easy Ways to Save Money

Reduce Your Energy Bill:

  1. Clean your dryer filter after each use, or better yet use the clothes line.
  2. Don’t turn your dishwasher on for only a few plates
  3. Change your lights to the more energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.
  4. Insulate your home to reduce the cost of cooling and heating.

Around the Home:

  1. Empty your change into a money box each day. This can calculate into a lot over a year.
  2. Know your phone plans. Find out when off-peak times are to call long distance or mobiles.
  3. Save money on cartridges by changing your printer’s output to grayscale if colour is not required.
  4. Sell your clutter on eBay or hold a garage sale.

At the Shops:

  1. Buy clothes for next year at the end of the season when they go on sale.
  2. Buy generic. Flour is flour, sugar is sugar. Save “brand names” for the things you really enjoy.
  3. Stock up on groceries that you use regularly when they are on sale.
  4. Write a shopping list before you go to the supermarket. Check what you ‘really’ need and stick to you list.
  5. Don’t shop on an empty stomach. This prevents impulse purchases on snack food.

Entertainment:

  1. Do an internet search for free events happening in your area.
  2. Frequent your local library.
  3. Take your own lunch to work and your own snacks and drinks to the movies.
  4. If you smoke or drink, stop! Just think of how much you spend on these unhealthy habits.
  5. Choose haircuts that do not require frequent trimming, or learn to cut your own hair.

Banking:

  1. Look for lower interest rates – transferring the balance of your high interest credit cards to a lower interest card could potentially save you hundreds of dollars a year.
  2. Reduce your interest by making weekly or fortnightly payments on your loan instead of monthly.
